product description
The
Men of Mortuaries Calendar is the brainchild of Kenneth McKenzie, the successful owner of McKenzie Mortuary in Long Beach, Calif., and proceeds from the calendar’s sales will benefit a nonprofit organization that McKenzie founded in honor of his sister, Katherine Alyce McKenzie-Meadows, who successfully conquered breast cancer in 2003.
McKenzie formed the nonprofit, KAMM Cares Cancer Foundation, to offer financial relief to women facing the difficult life challenges associated with breast cancer. He hopes that the sale of the calendar will raise enough funds to provide financial grants to women all over the nation so that they can continue on with their daily lives without having to worry about financial matters due to lost wages, out-of-pocket medical expenses and other related costs that often weigh heavily on families facing the disease.
“While there are so many worthy breast cancer charities that are dedicated to education, research and treatment of the breast cancer, I couldn’t find one that simply offered assistance to help ease the financial burden that oftentimes goes part and parcel with the disease,” said McKenzie, whose sister is currently living cancer-free. “Little things like going to the movies and dining out are sometimes compromised as families on limited incomes are forced to cover added expenses associated with the disease. I hope that sales of the Men of Mortuaries calendar raise enough funds to substantially improve their lives.”
McKenzie initiated the calendar idea in 2007 by sending letters to mortuaries throughout the United States explaining the concept behind the calendar and offering $1,000 for each of the men selected to be a part of the endeavor. The finalists were selected out of more than 300 responses and each was flown to Long Beach, Calif. for the photo shoot in April.
According to McKenzie, the intention of the calendar is to sell as many units as possible before year’s end to raise funds for KAMM Cares Cancer Foundation.
“The planning committee behind the calendar has decided that it be tasteful and not too provocative; that it be reminiscent of the popular ‘Fire Hunks’ calendars that were so popular a decade or so ago,” said McKenzie. He added that he and several of the “hunks” will be engaging in New York City and Los Angeles media tours/calendar signings in October to boost sales and that each of the participants will be instructed as to how to spur sales in their own markets.
“I see this being a big seller especially in terms of Christmas stocking stuffers, birthday presents, novelty items and bachelorette party and gag gifts,” said McKenzie. “I just hope that our efforts will pay off for all of the families facing the tragedy of breast cancer.”
Monies
raised from the calendar will directly benefit the
KAMM foundation dedicated to the caring and assistance
of people who are going through the treatment of
breast cancer. Proceeds will provide these people
assistance with such necessities as child care costs
and groceries, to name just two. The primary goal of
KAMM is to provide people going through cancer with
more opportunities to make their lives better.
